Teams to watch out this world cup 2014
We are a month or so away from one of the biggest sporting events in the world- The FIFA WC 2014.While the focus of the sporting world is shifting towards this event (Not India though, IPL is on you see :P) I thought I would probably share my thoughts on the teams I feel/hope would fare well at the tournament.
Pardon me if I am a little biased or if my list doesn’t seem impressive to you. So, here we go!!
Brazil – The 5 time world champions will surely start the tournament as favourites and the fact that the WC is being held in their own country would be an added advantage. With the likes of Neymar, David Luiz, Marcelo, Oscar and co. the Samba boys surely look like they’ll make their opponents dance to their tunes. Also, an indicator of their destructive abilities was witnessed when they demolished defending world champions Spain 3-0 in last year’s Confederation Cup.
Germany– If there’s a trophy for the most formidable team; I feel Germany would walk away with it hands down. With talents like Ozil,Muller,Reus,Gotze,Lahm (and many more!! ) likely to make the playing 11 it would be a big mistake to write them off. Their fast flowing and exciting football will surely entertain the crowd in the coming month.
Spain– Although this team does not look as unbeatable as earlier, they still have a squad that can annihilate any opposition on their day. With an aging squad and a lack of fire power up front I feel they have their backs against the wall this WC. But then they are Spain and they surely know how to win!! At least in the past 10 years!
England– Only the English team will know how they manage to choke in crunch situations even after having one of the best teams for over a decade now! The eternal chokers will get another chance at glory this WC and I hope they do justice to their talent this time around. But they are in the toughest group, (Group of Death) and any lacklustre performance would send them and their celebrity wags (who will be accompanying them like ALWAYS!!!) home pretty early!
And then! There would be no fun without seeing the underdogs taking down some giants. And I feel this time it would be Belgium. This team has some exciting players who have been making their presence felt at top clubs in Europe and elsewhere. With a strong defense in Kompany, Vermaelen, Courtois and Mignolet and an attacking line-up consisting of Hazard,Mirallas,Lukaku and Januzaj this team is surely no pushover. I would surely be rooting for them this June.
These would be my picks but you can also watch out for Portugal (Ronaldo to be specific :P) ,Argentina (they have Messi you see!) and Italy. All in all, it would certainly be a fascinating tournament with some breath-taking football which you surely wouldn’t wanna miss.
